But after my visit with him last Wednesday, everything started to feel worse.
I finally went to see a doctor who told me that I had a sinus infection. It was hard to swallow at first because I haven't had a cold or any other viral illness since nearly a year ago. Just major tooth pain, extreme exhaustion, and headaches all of a sudden. The doctor must be right because the Amoxicillin I'm taking is working. It has been about a decade since I last had a sinus infection, and I don't remember being knocked out for so long when I got them in college. Again, another reminder of being almost 30. Today was the first day that I felt normal for the past week and a half.
According to a recent report from WBAL-TV, all the trees and flowers are blooming simultaneously after weeks of being covered by the record snowfalls we experienced back in February. The report, and others, predict that it's only going to get worse.
So after doing some research, I came up with this checklist of ways to prevent future sinus infections:
- Try to open windows daily, even if only an inch high, to admit fresh air and let out the stale air from your home -- CHECK
- Shower every evening to wash pollen off skin, hair, and clothes -- CHECK
- Minimize early-day activities because, from 5 to 10 a.m., the dew tends to dry and the pollen tends to peak -- NEED TO DO
- Run an air purifier with a HEPA filter -- NEED TO DO
- Eat food that is rich in antioxidants, which can include garlic, berries, carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, grapes and spinach, nutritional supplements are recommended also -- CHECK
- Explore nasal irrigation, a technique in which you pass saline water through your nasal passages -- NEED TO DO, but holding off on the idea of using a Neti Pot
